What's the plan?
Day 1
Arrival to Saint-Petersburg. Transfer to the hotel (not included). Free time.
Day 2
Early morning at 6 am speed-train “Lastochka” to Sortavala (Karelia). Arrival to Sortavala about 10 am. Accommodation at the hotel. Lunch at the cafe. Walking around the ancient city of Sortavala. Visiting one of the museums – The North Ladoga Region Museum, War history Museum, Art museum of Kronid Gogolev. Walking to Vakkosalmi park and Kukhavuori Hill (63.5 m). A wonderful panorama of Ladoga Bay, the historic part of the city and new buildings opens from this place. Trip to Ruskeala Mining Park – one of the brightest and most amazing places of the North Ladoga region. It is the monument of industrial culture of the XVIII-XIX centuries. Hiking in the forest around Marble Canyon. Return to the hotel. Dinner at the cafe (not included). Hiking 7-10 km
Day 3
Breakfast at the hotel. Hiking to Riekkalansaari Island - the nearest to Sortavala, one of the largest islands of Lake Ladoga. Snack lunch during the hiking. The nature of the island is unique: here one can find high rocks with canyons, plains with wild fields and meadows, boggy hollows and a small lake. Reaching the observation points of Riuttavuori Mount ("a reef mountain ", “an unapproachable mountain”) and Linnavuori Mount (“fortress tower”) on the top of which you still can see the remnants of the ramparts of the Karelian ancient settlement dated back to the XIIth –XIIIth centuries. Return to the hotel. Dinner at the cafe (not included). Hiking 15 km
Day 4
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer from Sortavala to Kharlu Settlement. Hiking route: Kharlu - Lake Pitkyayarvi - Lake Ristiyarvi - Petsevaara Uplands - Lake Khaukkayarvi – reaching the road. Petsevaara is a rocky massif the highest point of which is 187 m. The slopes of the hills are steep, many rocky outcrops are covered with pines. On the route, you will meet picturesque lakes with high stone shores - Pitkyayarvi, Ristiyarvi and Khaukkayarvi. Snack lunch on the way. Return to the hotel by minibus. Dinner at the cafe (not included). Hiking 25 km
Day 5
Travel by ship to Valaam Island. You will discover a wonderful world during this voyage: waves of the lake, small islands, seagulls, granite coast with notched rocks and pine groves. Hiking and visiting the Valaam Monastery. Hiking 5,5 km
Day 6
Transfer to Impilakhti Settlement. Hiking route to the Khanukka Peninsula (ascension to the observation point). We will enjoy beautiful steep rocks of Impilakhti. The shore of the gulf having the same name opens into the breathtaking views to the Ladoga. Night at the guest house. Hiking 16 km NB: the route may be changed depending on weather conditions (a strong wind).
Day 7
After short transfer hiking along wood roads to the Belye Mosty Falls (White Bridges Falls) the highest falls in the southern Karelia (35 m high). Come back. Night at the guest house. Hiking 16 km
Day 8
Ethno-tour to Kinerma. Visiting the ancient Karelian village - Kinerma. You will immerse into the culture and life of Karelian people which have kept their traditions from the 18-19th centuries. Walk around the village. You will meet a local woman Nadezhda – a 15th generation native Karelian who will tell you about a life of peasants, about the Soviet-Finnish war and about a place of Karelians in modern Russia. In the village you will see amazingly beautiful houses of the 18th and 19th centuries, an ancient chapel with remained iconostasis, unique views. After such impressions we will see how a modern Karelian house is arranged inside where you will be fed with a tasty national lunch composed of Karelian dishes. Departure to Petrozavodsk – the capital of Karelia.
Day 9
Breakfast at the hotel. Time for walks with a guide and buying some souvenirs. Optionally (extra pay): Tour to the Museum-Reserve on Kizhi island. Trip by boat. Unique chance to see Kizhi - a pearl of Russian wooden architecture and a miracle of northern nature. The museum collection is based on the ensemble of wooden churches of the XVIIIth century which is included on the UNESCO List of World Cultural and Natural Heritage. The program includes a sightseeing tour around the island-museum, drinking tea with the tastiest national pastry as well as acquaintance with particularities of the country life in Zaonezhskaya Village. After that - walking to remote villages (cycling upon wish). Return to the Petrozavodsk. Evening speed-train “Lastochka” to Saint-Petersburg at 18:00. Arrival to Spb at 22:56. Night flight or night in the hotel (not included, upon request).
Day 10
Transfer to the airport. Flight home.

1. The duration of the walking day along the route has been calculated for the group of up to 10 persons who are 35-years-old and in good physical shape. The actual duration of the walking day may differ from the planned one.

2. The route may be corrected by the guide depending on the weather conditions and physical fitness of the group.

3. If there is a strong wind on Ladoga Lake, the trip to Valaam may be shifted to another day or replaced by another excursion without any loss of the scope of services to be rendered.
